About the Song

‘Weird’ is the second single from Friendmaker’s forthcoming debut album. Musically ‘Weird’ offers a deliberately repetitive ear worm that subtly changes on each refrain reflecting the abstractions of dreamlike repetition. Audio samples of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s dream theory bookend three minutes of rhythmic indie rock with hooky melodies and pounding choruses.

Lyrically the song searches for meaning in a recurring dream, examining the semi-consciousness experienced between waking and sleeping, specifically the changeover between abstraction and lucidity and asks why the events of a dream often stay with us beyond slumber, dictating our conscious mood as if rooted in reality? Do we pay enough attention to the foreshadowing presented in our recurring dreams? And can we afford to ignore a subconscious that consistently throws up a repeated story line?

lyrics

There’s a dream that I re-enter
Where I’ve killed
I don’t know who or how or why
but I carry the guilt

And every night for months I went there
Without will
…. And every night…… I feel them closing in (sing not stunted)

And I’m not sure if I should surrender
Christ I don’t know if I was even asleep

I feel weird when I wake up … when I wake up … x2

And in these dreams I can’t remember If I even was me
Or some bizarre assemblage of other things
Heard them use the word “dismembered”, nah it couldn’t be me
then why do I feel nervous when they’re searching the mill?

It always ends before there’s answers
With the cops outside pointin’ weapons at me

I feel weird when I wake up … when I wake up … x2
